September – A Hectic Month Coming up

Next month will indeed be busy for Exeter City. Including a JPT tie, we’ll be playing 7 games. Of those, 5 will be at home. Enough to stretch the pockets of even the better off supporters.

It would be easy to write that September will be the defining month for the Club, at least on the field. However, there will still be 37 key league games to follow. So September won’t be the time to get the promotion celebration organised or to start looking the grounds in the National Conference.

Any fan that had witnessed just the Morecambe game, will still be trying to work out what happened in the subsequent 2 away games, both fine wins on the road. Maybe there were enough signs in the League Cup that we have what it takes and that the home 3-0 defeat to Morecambe is the blip in performance.

September looks like we have some easier games, at least on paper. Though plenty will remind me that football is not played on paper or on a spreadsheet! Key will the form of our strikers. In 4 games 1 League Cup and 3 League games) we have 2 goals apiece for Gow and Cureton, and 1 each for Bauza and O’Flynn. Form that will need to continue as well as an absence of injuries.

Burton, Wycombe and York at home should be straight-forward wins. A trip to the Kassam to play Oxford United, for the first time in the football league for many a season (2002/03 2 2-2 draws), will not be easy. A sense of resurgence is running through Oxford United and they will feel they owe us!

Southend United away will be no easy push over. Surely their current position near the bottom of the table is not an accurate reflection of their potential this season. Likewise, Bristol Rovers seem to be occupying a false position near the bottom of the foot of the Football League. I would expect them to be challenging in the play offs when they visit on Saturday 29th September.

We must not forget the distraction of Aldershot at home in the JPT. A chance for some of the bench players to start the game. Will progress in the JPT hinder our chances in the League, or will it offer a helpful distraction from the bread and butter?

An exciting month ahead then!
