In my experience what seems to bring the punters in to Exeweb is either a good cup run/draw or a bit of off-field crisis.
POLITE REQUEST FOR INFO

Are there any stats on the volume of posts these days compared with say 5 and 10 years ago please Jason ?

As a mere moderator rather than an admin, I'm not privy to this info. Not sure our admins will have info pre-dating their time here either.

O.K. Thank you for replying. The stats would be just interesting like.

The impression is of less regular posters and less posts in volume.

The output of stalwarts such as Lionel and Stroudy seems to have been in decline lately too. 😢

Wait till we lose a few games...the threads following wins are almost always much shorter than after a defeat..

Maybe it’s all down to there not being enough to moan about like you say, seems about right to me

We don't actually know the stats re regular posters or lurkers
If the number of posters has decreased it's probably due to a combination of reasons.
The "politics" thread is vibrant because the issue of BREXIT is ongoing (you never know what's going to happen next) and is clearly of great interest/importance for a core of posters.
MDT has slipped a bit (not so many match updates) but is starting to pick up a bit.
I'm surprised that Exeweb hasn't posted an evaluation form and asked for opinions and ideas for improvement. This would be standard procedure for many companies/services/ small businesses.
I do find that Exeweb is a bit defensive when people point out deficiencies or make suggestions.
Overall, Exeweb is a very useful tool for me as an expat in Asia (I apologize for my countless posts since having retired) but it could do with some new ideas to make it more interesting and also to attract the young 'uns.

Using the post number (select # @right side of posts, mostly from the music quiz redux thread). Been able to calculate annual posts since 2005 (from start of July) - adjustments made for the lost Exeweb posts of 2012/13.

Current number of posts are about 1/3 of ten years ago.

Obviously these reflect quantity of posts, I'll let overs consider the quality question :)

I think part of the reason that exeweb is used less is that it does not work very well on a phone. It's ok on a PC but trying to access and post via a phone is a nightmare.

Takes some getting used to, but once you do, it’s a doddle on a phone.

Interesting, I would have said we were quieter on Exeweb than previous years but seems to be that we are holding up if not slightly improving. The greater numbers earlier probably relate to the euphoria of surviving and becoming a supporter based club with the interest gradually waining as we stabilised.
