Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.

How do I post this as Ian Sideman?

Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Who outranks the other and why?

William Basie would be higher up the royal line of ascension than Edward Ellington.

What about Nat King Cole or King Oliver?

King Louie of 'I wanna be like you' fame might just trump them all.

Duke Ellington was unofficially knighted by Stevie Wonder, if that has any relevance...

Edit: Stevie also name checks Basie in 'Sir Duke', but only in passing.

The answer has nothing to do with the peerage.

True story.

Both were involved in a battle of the bands in the 1930s, proving that cheesy musical competitions were not invented by Simon Cowell. Ellington apparently won, outranking Basie.

And now over to another guessing game involving initials.
