Bertie was very active on Twitter promoting his outlet and pretty sure there was some ECFC re-tweeting going on back then.
ECFC now re-tweets to 63,000 followers, any budding entrepreneur could become extremely busy as a result. Bertie retired to concentrate on his thriving business, does ECFC really wish to encourage other full-time pros to do the same, perhaps prematurely ?

Encouraging players to retrain and gain qualifications for a post playing career is entirely different, as is re-tweeting and promoting Steve Flack Building Services once he's retired. I'm all for that.

Elgin - if any City player underperforms because he is not focused due to his business interests then it's up to the manager to speak to the player about it and take the necessary steps if things don't improve. I can't imagine that problem arises very often.

We also plugged Jordan Moore-Taylor's recycling company. And while I appreciate that there is a business angle I think it's been part and parcel of what we do for player's endeavours. It's one tweet on social media.

Perhaps we could persuade Lee to advertise in other ways #LeeHolmesOnFlyer

And it is absolutely in the interests of the organisation to acknowledge it, since it might result in a non-tangible benefit in the future - either through strengthening loyalty and a willingness to see out his career in the city, or a longer-term benefit of sponsorship in the future. This kind of mutual encouragement is part and parcel of small business enterprise.
Most people who play for ECFC don't retire at the end of their playing career. I think the club promoting a player's new local business when they have come to the end of their career is very different from promoting particular player's business interests during their time at ECFC. How can we judge this non-tangible benefit, to assess its value and make sure people are being treated fairly? We know little about this business. Things are less muddled if we generally didn't do this kind of thing and over the long term transparency pays.

In any case, how would it be any different to, say, Liverpool players rubbing themselves in Nivea products in commercials?
A club's players promoting products is different from a club freely promoting players promoting products.

Glad to see that the club is demonstrating a more enlightened approach to the well-being and future prosperity of its playing staff than some of the negative views expressed in this thread.

Investing in people is one of the club's relative strengths in the Trust era. I think we should support player's long term interests but, to be frank, are there more deserving candidates than Lee H? I have no idea how he has managed his affairs but he has spent years playing in the Championship.

Didn't I read an article about Flacky doing his building work after training?
