Because the monarch's head is shown in profile - all British coins were called Half-Crowns. Causing much confusion.

A competition organised by Reader's Digest enabled distinctive and popular names to be being given to each coin with just the one coin type retaining it's original name. This coin was then promptly withdrawn from circulation.
