Winchester City have announced that Jon Gittens has passed away aged 55.

The defender played nearly 100 times for City during the 1998 to 2000 seasons.

I remember him well too very tough and committed player sailed close to the wind with challenges around the box at a time when you could get away with a bit more. Very sad indeed much to young RIP.

Sad news indeed. 55 is no age at all. RIP John.

That’s sad news - I held hands with Jon when I ran onto the pitch as the City mascot at the last game of the season against Shrewsbury Town in the 1999-2000 season, wearing a curly red wig and full kit. I was 26 years old. Jon was ace. RIP.

Sad news. One of the nice guys would always have a word although he appeared to be the quiet type. Never gave less than 100%. RIP John

Come on fellas, let's at least get his name right. Remember Jon Gittens as an uncompromising defender, always appeared to give his all, albeit in the twilight of his career wearing the City shirt.

Nice touch by the Gulls, they're really getting their act together down there.
