A mention for the Devonport Inn,a odd place when I used to drink in there(86-88) the door was locked & the landlord(Frank Bellbin aka Sparksie) was a bit fussy who he let in..There was a special knock & he would open to let you in or if he did not know the person or the cut of their jib tell them to pi55 off ....
The only reason I got in was because he knew the lad i drank with..

He was a sitting tenant iirc & the brewery were fairly happy when he decided to finish in 1988..

ps..My only trophies from pool or darts were from that pub, mind you there were only 2 of us in the competition

Talking of trophies, I have a few skittles ones from the Ship and Pelican during the mid 80s

You might be able to get a picture of the Ship to display your trophies in front of ...

Back in the eighties (?) the landlord was a dog lover, who had a mahoosive pair of friendly Irish Wolfhounds, who would casually saunter up to any car which arrived in the car park. Sitting in your car they towered over you, and I'm sure that on occasions potential customers decided against venturing in ! Additionally he kept a "Yorkie" which certainly boosted food sales. It felt it had a divine right to half of all food sold, and could smell a pasty or hear a bag of crisps rustle fifty yards away up the towpath. It's belly was absolutely enormous !
