Went up on a coach from Dawlish, picked me up from outside Langdon Hospital(I was not on day release from my secure unit !) at 0530.Picked others up at Exeter Services.Zipped up to the coach meeting point on the A1 at Gateshead arriving at 1130(just one stop for 10 mins on the way up for a driver change-toilet was on the coach)
In a pub for 2 hours until the police escort arrived(5 coaches there iirc) at 1330.

We all know the rest..Simply a amazing day.

Remember going on a train special that lacked heating. Catering consisted of someone selling from the guards van.

Police escort through the centre of Newcastle with abuse from the locals.

Remember the day well. A cold, frosty start in Oxfordshire and Dad's Hillman Hunter wouldn't start so five of us got into our neighbours red Simca 100 (not too dissimilar to this, https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=Yy+S0PNh&id=507F5815111261E8D6F7A9AA838126D4C66F7396&thid=OIP.Yy-S0PNhF9IfS0GWI4pn4gHaEO&mediaurl=http://www.curbsideclassic.com/wp-content/comment-image/207253.jpg&exph=457&expw=800&q=Simca&simid=607991578196445705&selectedIndex=130&ajaxhist=0). I remember us stopping at Scotch Corner for something to eat and going around a one way system a couple of times in Newcastle. My abiding memory about the game was trying to watch it through a see of Coppers legs.

Not sure if it was after that game or more likely another trip to the other SJP but I witnessed a demonstration against their manager - hundreds of Geordies chanting "Cox out!". True story.

Definitely after that game, we nearly hit a big piece of wood on the A1M Near Washington services.

Weren't there two special trains ? One broke down at Bristol, I was on the other one. Catering ran out before Birmingham. Police escort through centre of Newcastle and it was like the circus had come to town; everybody at the windows and other vantage points to see the City fans making their way through the streets. Made own way (with two brothers and two mates) back to the station after the game, avoided having concrete thrown at us like some of my schoolmates, but had a fire extinguisher lobbed at us from another train as we sat on our train. Ice on the inside of the windows as we came home. A friend's hair froze to the window, which he swears is why he's bald now.
