    Sausages, bacon, fried eggs, mushrooms (as long as they aren't swimming in their own juice, which permeates the rest of the meal), black pud, toast, hash browns, beans (must be kept away from the egg, toast and hash browns, sausages are usually a good dam). Tomatoes turn my stomach and few places can do fried bread that tastes reasonable. Despite what Manc might say, hash browns are most definitely a requirement and not optional.

    I concur. I have enjoyed some splendid Oirish breakfasts. Did you partake of the Full Irish or the Ulster Fry ?

    The variations of the soda bread, potato farl and white pudding do not detract at all.

    Haven't been meself but i'm told that Meat 59 in Magdalen Road do a very good breakfast although it's more like a mixed grill.

    I had a 'Full English' on the Greek island of Kos once. It consisted of those cheap hot dog sausages that come in a jam jar, aforementioned plum tomatoes, a whole tin of beans and some white sliced bread with so much marg slapped on it that it could've swam the channel. It was as if someone had seen a faxed photo of a breakfast once and tried to recreate it. For added 'local colour' everything on the plate was stone cold - I don't think the beans and tomatoes had been heated at all.

    Surely the first rule of fry-up club is that, at some point during the fry-up, you have a forkful that has a bit of everything on it.

    In the old 'Streets' cafe in St George's Market, chips accounted for about half the plate on their breakfast. Cynthia's Special it was called IIRC. Dirty yes, but it would knock your hangover right out of the park.

    I thought chips were solely the preserve of the "all day" breakfast.

    Yes, a half moon and a full moon The clientele sometimes leaves a lot to be desired though.
