I don't know, I'll check it out - I thought you had to travel with a child to get the discounts - fine when I'm going somewhere with my kids but not with my mates. Maybe I've got it wrong.

Fred..The split from Birmingham NS to Exeter is Brum-Chelt-Bris TM-Taunton-Exeter : For future reference.
All off peak day returns..You have a bit of flexibility of getting any train by doing it that way(especially for someone like me,who has been known to miss the odd train )

Don't get me started on train tickets. I'm convinced that they come up with prices by pressing the big red button on their random number generator.

I went to Bristol a couple of weekends ago and a single was the same price as a return. How? Why? I used to get the train from Bristol to Paddington quite regularly which was the best part of 200 for a peak return. Split it at Didcot and it was about half the cost yet it was the same train. I understand how that works but it's plainly stupid.

This is a very handy website: https://www.splitticketing.com/

The Burton to Exeter return journey on Saturday (as per OP) would be 66 for example.
