So today's discussion topic: Boris Johnson.

On borrowed time? Untouchable? Or done nothing wrong? (Other opinions are available)

If he came up with the remark about the Iranian lady totally off the cuff, and it ends up costing her freedom, then he should walk.

However, I'm swayed towards the idea that he was either briefed badly or that he inadvertently revealed the truth (which is not the "official line").

Ministers used to walk for the faults of their civil servants, bad briefing etc.

Shirley Boris is misplaced in the Foreign Office ?

Did they? To my barely trained eye ministers tend to fall on their sword a lot more quickly nowadays than they did in the past.

This particular former student had the doctrine of ministerial responsibility and the Crichel Down affair (1954 and Sir Thomas Dugdale falling on his swordage) hammered home while studying British Constitution for "A" levels. I don't think it really applies any more.

In fairness that sounds a lot more "scandalous" than someone merely fluffing their lines a bit in front of a committee.

Wikipedia is great for this sort of thing (and always accurate too).

When studying British Constitution (1968-70) we did not have the advantage of the disclosure which came much later that Sir Thomas Dugdale was complicit in the "scandal." The received wisdom at the time was that he had played no part in the decision making and honourably took one for the team as a result of the errors of his civil servants. This misinformation despite the usual "independent" enquiry.
