Then again, we send touring teams to Asia and expect them to compete. Not easy for players who've never batted on a turner or bowled on one.
The remit for Championship games it to provide a pitch suitable for 4 day cricket and not a testing ground for batting out East against spinners.

Just out of interest, I wonder if this means a pitch which will last four days but not longer, or a pitch which plays well throughout a four-day match? If the former, you could reasonably expect some turn by the third day. If the latter, you could have a pitch like the one prepared for a timeless test in South Africa in 1939, where they had to call a halt after nine or ten days of cricket so that England wouldn't miss their boat home! :)

I found this interesting on the topic

The linkly thing may not work but a general search of ECB Pitch Document 2017 gets there

What is happening with Crossbowgate? There could still be a sting in the tail.

Nothing - we don't have a leg to stand on with that.

Us: "We could have made up the overs!"

ECB: "You were batting after tea on the final day!"

Quick declaration and put the pie throwers on with a 2 yard run up to rattle through 20+ overs in an hour ?

IIRC we weren't far enough ahead in terms of runs to do that - could be wrong though.

181 ahead with 7 down. Your boys were apparently told that as a result of the crossbow incident there would be no points deducted so I can see some merit in the gripe.

I see Pitchgate is concluded on a final basis now with the pitch marked below average and no points deducted.

Just Crossbowgate now to threaten Somerset's Division 1 status in 2018 and as Middlesex have ruled out bringing in m'learned friends it seems unlikely that one will go anywhere now.

Could Somerset yet be relegated?

Crossbowgate reconvened.
