Why is Henderson there? The bloke is a carthorse. How can you leave players like Lallana, Wilshire and even Shelvey behind and take him is beyond me.

It’s because every great team needs someone who stands in midfield making 10 yard sideways passes

To be fair I don't rate Henderson either but he's been very effective in Liverpools run to the CL final. He's had a good season and is there on merit. Lallana doesn't play in that position - he's been left behind in favour of Alli, Lingard, Sterling and Rashford (all ahead of Lallana in my eyes) - Wilshere hasn't developed as anyone would have hoped and although better technically than Henderson, he hasn't really been able to demonstrate the ability to play up to 8 games in a row - do we really want him taking up a squad place as a gamble? Shelvey I have some sympathy for, but he'll be horrendously exposed against the better sides and (perhaps unfairly these days) his history of having a temper counts against him as well.

The part I found surprising is taking 3 specialist right backs - Walker, Trippier and TAA. I think they will all do well and all deserve a call up, I'm just surprised we're taking all 3 to the WC.

Walker is there to play the right side of the three man defence.

Agreed but we won't use that every game - and where we play a back four, he will be RB. So seems odd to me to take all 3 of them. Normally you only take one specialist RB!

In the modern game I would suggest taking two as it's now full/wingback, one more defensive full back the other more offensive wing back. Personally, I can see Southgate sticking with the three at the back in whatever formation comes.

Definitely a fair point, the games evolved. Don't get me wrong I see why they're all there and think it's a good balanced squad - just caught me a bit off guard is all.

Three at the back might need to become 5 against the likes of Belgium!
