From the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, Saturday 14 March 1925

Football.
ASSOCIATION,
GRECIANS' LONG TRIP.
Twelve players of City, officials, and some ardent supporters left St. David's station, Exeter, yesterday afternoon, on a decidedly long, but nevertheless enjoyable trip.

To-day the Grecians will oppose Norwich City at the Nest, and as the Canaries have gained two of the last six points played for home, there are no grounds for pessimism as far as Devonians are concerned. It high time the Exonians captured another away point, and the Nest seems a likely place, although it is difficult arena for strangers.

One cannot praise attitude the City Directors changing the inside-forward positions again, but all must hope for the best. Kirk resumes at inside-right, while Davis and Leivesley are preferred to Blackmore, and Shelton. last-named players, however, have gone as reserves. Alter the match the party will make for Holland in order oppose the Ajax Club at Amsterdam on Monday. Everyone will wish them enjoyable and successful trip. The eleven duty to-day is:-
Bailey; Pollard and Charlton, Pullan; Crompton and Potter; Matthews, Kirk, Davis, Leivesley, and Compton.

From the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette published on Wednesday 18 March 1925:

THE GRECIANS'
VISIT TO HOLLAND

The Exeter City party arrived back yesterday afternoon well pleased with their excursion to Holland. The sea trip from Norwich to Rotterdam was successfully undertaken without anyone being affected with mal-de-mer.

Arriving at Amsterdam it was found that the Ajax Club were without some of their regular players owing to a match with Belgium. The Grecians made one change from the side which defeated Norwich, namely, the substitution of Blackmore for Davis. Some 15,000 people paid to see the game.

Harry Kirk had the honour of performing the "hat-trick" and the other goals were scored by Charlton (penalty) and Leivesley. The homesters scored once.

No charging was permitted in the match, but, apparently kicking went unpunished. Happily none of the Grecians suffered any injury, in fact, the only person not feeling quite up to scratch was "Owd Jack" a familiar figure at St James's Park, and he has contracted a cold.

Everyone voted the trip a real treat in every way and it is hoped the players will give some recompense by treating their supporters to a dazzling win over Brentford on Saturday.

I can't repeat any clips for the 1951 tour, as the British Newspaper Archives stop in 1950.

Backing Gary Caldwell, thanks Matt and good luck.
Maybe we can tour Holland again and perhaps play Ajax under 18's or something.

Dutch tours in 1925 and 1951

After all the research into and celebration of our historic tour of South America in 1914 the new Trust History Group is starting to explore the two tours made to Holland in 1925 and 1951.

While the basic information is available in newspaper reports and has been covered in books on City's history we are not aware of any memorabilia connected to the tours. If anyone knows of anything then please do get in contact.

Also a reminder to historians - always check original sources. One book says City lost 5-1 to 'a strong' Ajax side in 1925 and another that City won 5-1 against an Ajax team 'not quite at full strength owing to some members of the team being engaged in an international against Belgium'.

City did win 5-1: another great bit of our heritage - beating Ajax! Centenary game coming up in 2025?

Remember playing Go Ahead Deventer at the park in a psf during the sixties. They featured Duck Beek, billed as "The blonde whirlwind", can't remember much else though.
