Its that time of year again when I get invited to join my esteemed work colleagues for a meal. Once again the menu has been made nice & pretentious so my work colleagues feel important.

If I could get a translation & opinions of what I should eat that would fantastic. I must admit it wasn't as bad as last years menu to understand but the responses did help (and amuse).

Starters

Roast Pumpkin Soup
Toasted Pumpkin Seeds and Pumpkin Oil

Jerusalem Artichoke Risotto
Truffle Oil and Parmesan Shavings

Crispy Ham Hock Ballotine
Homemade Piccalilli, Endive Salad, Wholegrain Mustard and Honey Vinaigrette

Smoked Salmon Mousse
Pickled Beetroot, Garlic Croutons, Micro Herb Salad and Mixed Herb Yoghurt Dressing

Mains

Roast Turkey Breast
Apricot and Chestnut Stuffing, Confit Leg and Wilted Savoy Cabbage

Roast Beef
Celeriac Puree, Yorkshire Pudding, Wilted Kale and Red Wine Jus

Blue Cheese and Vegetable Wellington
Roast Red Pepper Sauce

Poached Cod Loin
Creamed leeks, Wild Mushroom and Tarragon Fricassee

Desserts

Christmas Pudding
Cognac Anglaise and Clotted Cream

Dark Chocolate Truffle Torte
Orange Puree, Vanilla ice cream

Lemon Syllabub
Winter Berry Compote and Shortbread Biscuit

Selection of Cheeses
Apricot and Stem Ginger Chutney, Biscuits and Candied Walnuts

* (All mains served with a side order of vegetables and roast potatoes)

We're doing the pud at our big family Christmas lunch this year, and the Missus suggested doing a Syllabub. "What the eff is a Syllabub?" I replied, which didn't go down well.

That one's fairly easy: Halloween leftovers fresh from the freezer.

Starters

Roast Pumpkin Soup, Toasted Pumpkin Seeds and Pumpkin Oil - for pumpkin lovers, but it's still only soup.

Jerusalem Artichoke Risotto Truffle Oil and Parmesan Shavings - no meat so can be easily ruled out without explanation

Crispy Ham Hock Ballotine, Homemade Piccalilli, Endive Salad, Wholegrain Mustard and Honey Vinaigrette - tied up pork with some sauce

Smoked Salmon Mousse, Pickled Beetroot, Garlic Croutons, Micro Herb Salad and Mixed Herb Yoghurt Dressing - posh pate with some stuff they're trying to get rid of

Mains

Roast Turkey Breast, Apricot and Chestnut Stuffing, Confit Leg and Wilted Savoy Cabbage - turkey with a rancid stuffing and some greens

Roast Beef Celeriac Puree, Yorkshire Pudding, Wilted Kale and Red Wine Jus - beef with some funny tasting mash that isn't potato, greens and red sauce that doesn't taste of much

Blue Cheese and Vegetable Wellington, Roast Red Pepper Sauce - blue cheese and no meat. Nuff said

Poached Cod Loin Creamed leeks, Wild Mushroom and Tarragon Fricassee - Fish and veg

Desserts

Christmas Pudding, Cognac Anglaise and Clotted Cream - Xmas pud, custard and cream, like you need both

Dark Chocolate Truffle Torte, Orange Puree, Vanilla ice cream - Terry's chocolate orange in pastry and ice cream

Lemon Syllabub, Winter Berry Compote and Shortbread Biscuit - I'm not sure what a syllabub is either, but it doesn't sound trustworthy

Selection of Cheeses, Apricot and Stem Ginger Chutney, Biscuits and Candied Walnuts - the cheese course should follow dessert, not be instead of

* (All mains served with a side order of vegetables and roast potatoes)
I've put some explanations above. I'd go with ham and beef then take a chance on the syllabub. Well, you only live once.

We're going here for our Xmas lunch. No, i'm not paying.

My advice is to pick three dishes you've never heard of - expand your mind and your palette.

Plus, if you don't like 'em, just drink more beer / wine / vodka / meths

Never do work's Christmas do's, my logic is that you have to work with these people all year, the last thing you want to do is to socialise with them as well. Bah humbug to me!

Cheers guys. The Syllabub seems to have booze in it so thats on the list. I'll be having the Ham as that sounds the most normal. Now its the decider between Turkey vs Beef.

Isn't cognac Anglaise brandy source rather than custard? Sort it out LOGthorpe. I have once had syllabub and still couldn't tell you what it is, other than it being tasty and full of booooozzze.
