    Re: General Election - 8thJune

I've been thinking about this, and I'm more and more convinced we're heading for no deal, because it is what is best for May. To make further concessions from chequers would be the end of her. But...

Corbyn has now said that while he will not call for it, he will if the party members vote for it.

By chance I'm in Birmingham and accidentally staying next to the UKIP conference. Currently the protest is looking bigger than the conference.

    Re: General Election - 8thJune

May's bluster seems somewhat misplaced when she is unlikely to get her deal past parliament anyway. I'm more and more sure that she thinks no deal is the best way to safeguard her survival, and is...

Lovely dramatic end to her speech there. I reckon she's been practicing that in the mirror.

    Re: General Election - 8thJune

So Theresa May was due to deliver a statement at 1.45, but it was delayed by a lack of power in Downing Street. The headlines are already writing themselves.

Yes, Kurz is the President of the Council of the European Union, as opposed to the President of the European Council. You don't ever seem to hear much from him, compared to the other two presidents....

Indeed. And previous incumbent Van Rumpuy was the elected representative of Belgium. Had we stuck it out, no doubt Jeremy Corbyn or Boris Johnson would one day have been president. I'm marginally...

It's not like that though is it, Tusk was appointed because he was the elected representative of Poland, he wasn't some random guy off the street.

    Re: General Election - 8thJune

I'm not arguing she isn't elected, I'm arguing Tusk is as elected as she is. Neither of them are directly elected by the general population of either the UK or the EU.

The membership of the conservative party is not exactly representative of the general population. The European council is at least elected, directly or indirectly as the case may be.

A catalyst yes, but not a cause. As I said, it was waiting to happen, it just needed a spark. And it's likely to happen again because nothing has been done to address those causes.
