SJP naming rights

In the 50s and early 60's the roof of the OGS was emblazoned with REGENT (an oil/ petrol company of the era). I can't imagine that it was a particularly lucrative deal though, as mass air travel was in its infancy, particularly to/from Exeter Airport.
And, unlike Brentford, I don't think SJP is directly on the flightpath?

I believe it was always called The Cowshed. Numerous other clubs (Tranmere, Huddersfield, Accrington for example) also had covered terraced sections named The Cowshed. Lots of other clubs (Chelsea, Dundee United for example) just had The ’Shed as a name.
I can't believe it was built and opened as "the cowshed"... it's a nickname surely

The Doble retains nothing of that stand - it's a (fairly) modern seated stand which kicked out the noisy fans and replaced them with directors boxes and the highest paying seated supporters at the time - whereas the Big Bank was a direct replacement

Here’s the story from the archive:

The terraced side of the pitch being called the "Flower-Pot Stand. I assume it started being called the Cowshed after the roof was put over it. (I would also assume Chelsea’s supporters introduced the Shed nickname after that terrace gained a roof).

Would any company have liked to have naming rights for SJP in 1980 when it looke like this?:
There we go, Ant has to call it the Flower-pot stand from now on 😂

Because of the pitch of the roof on the OG you'd have been able to see the advertising on top from inside the ground. I certainly cannot believe that the intention was to advertise to airline passengers, as there would have barely been any commercial traffic then.

Back in ye olden days when stadiums were built I doubt wether many stands were given official names. Most grounds had one grandstand and three sides of terracing. The grandstand would simply be called The Grandstand. The sides of the ground would quite often be known by the street name behind them (St James Road End for example), the name of the area behind them (Devenport End for example). Lots of stadiums had North, South, East, West stands. Cowshed, Shed, Kop etc are as you suggest just knicknames adopted by supporters.

Interesting to see in the film the newish concrete at the back of the BB. It was where the Social Club was from 1973 to 1978 or 79, before it was rebuilt behind the BB. Does anyone know why it was moved ?
It must have been a expensive exercise having only been in position for such a few years.

On the subject of The Cowshed, I remember a Bristol City coach unexpectedly turning up(it was the season they were promoted to the 1st Division-1976) after their game was postponed in the Midlands. The first thing they did was as was the norm back then was to try ‘to take’ a area of home support, cue bedlam at 2.30pm...A cry of “you’ll never take The Cowshed” cue laughter from the invaders who replied with “ Moooo “ 😁
