Very interesting talk From Marcus. He is to be congratulated for the amazing amount of work he does for the club.
Any chance you could give us a bit of a run down? Genuinely interested.

To paraphrase, most clubs are now able to..for example..
See how many tackles the left back/any player you choose made in a match
How we marked at corners
How we attacked at corners.
We get videos of other clubs to see how they approach a game..how they set up for corners, free kicks, long ball, play through the thirds etc
In effect 100s of hours of video to look at. This is condensed into 4-5 minutes to show the players. Either individually or as a team.

Recruitment
As an example..Matt will say we need a centre half in January....
He will give an idea of what sort of player he wants..eg..what percentage of headers does he win, passing accuracy, long ball accuracy. This is fed into a website (paid for, fans can't see it) and the site will throw up numerous names. Then availability is checked etc. Then a video of the players will be looked at and so the names get whittled down and a scout will be sent out to watch said player in a few matches till a final decision is made.
So when a player comes in Parkes, Atatanga etc and Matt says we have been watching him for some time, this is how it was done.
Thus, if Matt decides we need a new striker in January we can be confident that one or two have already been earmarked.
Phew..

A final reminder. Both events should prove to be extremely interesting to Exeter City FC supporters with a fascination with the club's history

Friday 4 October 1.30pm

Football and War Seminar

RGB Building Supplies Legends Lounge, St James Park

Joint meeting with Senior Reds who will offer refreshments from 1.30 pm Then seminar will get underway at 2pm. There will be four short presentations - all on the theme of the World Wars and Exeter City. We are particularly pleased to welcome Tim Godden, a Devon based illustrator who produces striking 'cigarette card' style drawings of footballers with WW1 stories. He will talk about some of these.

At 6pm

Anniversary event and book launch

RGB Building Supplies Legends Lounge, St James Park

It is the 125th anniversary of the first association football match at St James Park on 6 October. To mark this we will be celebrating the event and launching a new book on the history of St James Park. Author Aidan Hamilton will be speaking about the heritage of the ground. Greetings Exewbbers.

I am super excited about our next guest speakers.

The next meeting of the Senior Reds will take place on Thursday 28th November in the RGB Lounge, 6pm for a 6.30pm start, when our guests will be Martyn, Peter and Scott Rogers.

Both Martyn and Peter were born in Bristol and joined the Grecians from Bath City in 1979, Martyn as a no nonsense defender and Peter as a skilful forward. Both went on to become regular starters in the team, and the famous FA Cup run of 1980/81 saw both score in the unforgettable 4-0 demolition of Newcastle United.

Martyn and Scott currently manage Tiverton Town, who of course have three City youngsters in their squad, whilst Peter lives in Bristol.

There'll be plenty to cover and, with Dave Phillips in the chair, it should be a very lively, informative and entertaining evening, so please come along if you can. All welcome

No doubt there will be lots of talk about that cup run, but Martyn has manged Tiverton for years and it will be interesting to hear about his years there and how he chooses loan players from us.

See you all there. UTC

Quite right Andy. Carlisle toppled from the top league all the way down to playing Exeter City again. The same went for Northampton Town around 1958-59. They won consecutive promotions all the way to the old First Division, and toppled back down again league by league. I think us getting beaten by them away 0-9 figured into their triumphal upward march somewhere!
Swansea City likewise and Leyton Orient although the latter’s rise was not as meteoric as Swansea’s or Northampton’s.

Bump for this exciting evening..

Our evening with Martyn, Peter and Scott Rogers on Thursday 28th November will be 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start.

Anyone who was at that Newcastle match, 2 of the goalscorers will be here at SJP. Anyone interested in the way the game was played in the 70-80s is also welcome to come along.

In fact everyone is welcome. You don't have to be an old codger.

Is anyone brave enough to ask Martyn whether his goal against Newcastle was either a) a crisp side footed volley or b) went in off his shin?
