Ah he's the father of the house, In other words one step away from the House of Lords and in there staying awake is a real challenge!!
Call me an elitist, but I find this approach worryingly simplistic. Jinx says this is an "entirely subjective view" as if the Yellowhammer paper and countless other studies by respected bodies have indicated that the UK will be poorer, and not just financially, after Brexit never existed.
There is the question of the evidence used to come to a particular view. Here is what a vox pop woman in Maesteg said the other day: "They say we're going to run out of medicines - that's just scaremongering; how can they know that? Just get us out..."
The answer to her question is "because some people who understand the complexities of medical supply chains have looked at the issue in some detail and come to this conclusion".
But under your "when you decide on who’s view should prevail, you go with the majority view" dictum, both views are equally valid, more people agree with the woman from Maesteg, so her view should prevail....
Yes, I believe anyone who defects to another party (not those who simply resign the whip / have the whip withdrawn) should automatically face either a by-election or at least a recall petition. With the Liberal Undemocrats now in full Revoke mode and putting two fingers up to the result of the Referendum I wonder how Sam Gyimah is feeling today given his passion for a second vote ?
BTW: this particular non entity was a Tory MP who defected from the Tories last week and does not have the guts to submit himself for approval from his constituents at a by election.
Selected a candidate already? The local constitute meeting will be interestingYes, I believe anyone who defects to another party (not those who simply resign the whip / have the whip withdrawn) should automatically face either a by-election or at least a recall petition.
While Gyimah has never to my knowledge suggested anything like this, worse was Wollaston, who was a vocal advocate for automatic by-elections for defecting MPs. Funny how she failed to practice what she preached. Funnier still is that the Lib Dems had already selected their candidate for the next election in the seat.
There should be a law regarding this. It's also now quite evident that the Fixed Term Parliament Act is severely flawed and should be axed. It's resulted in a zombie government trapped and unable to govern.Yes, I believe anyone who defects to another party (not those who simply resign the whip / have the whip withdrawn) should automatically face either a by-election or at least a recall petition.

As is evident in the US where after the mid terms either the house or senate can be weighted against the president meaning not a lot gets done.An opinion endorsed by Vernon Bogdanor a leading expert on the British Constitution.
