Disregarding conditions, what players would you select for your best England XI to play the Aussies fir the Ashes?

Roy
Burns
Stokes
Root
Bairstow
Buttler
Archer
Broad
Rashid
Anderson
Wood

Roy might not work in red ball cricket but he has to be given a go.

Bit of a tail in that mind.

Thanks, Alistair. I'm no expert and don't follow County cricket any more, but for what it's worth I'd prefer a more solid batting line-up . Obviously selection depends on the wicket/conditions, but usually in England it's not really a spinner's wicket, right?

Roy
Burns
Root
Ballance
Vince
Buttler or Bairstow
*Stokes
**Broad
Archer
Rashid
Anderson

* or Curran or Woakes
** or Wood

Cannot see how Vince gets in above either of Bairstow or Buttler. Ballance has been in great form in the County game and is a valid suggestion but past failure at test level is an issue.

Ben Stokes is good enough to bat at 3 IMO

I like Stokes as an all-rounder but I don't like all-rounders in the top 5 batting order. Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I like
5 specialist batsmen
1 wicketkeeper/ batsman
1 all-rounder
4 specialist bowlers.

Also pondering if a medium pace swing bowler would often be needed considering English weather conditions.
Think it's definitely the batting which needs attention. Roy is a huge bonus if he can adapt to Test cricket.
PS. I lost interest in County cricket when they divided the teams into 2 divisions

How does Rashid get ahead of either Ali or Leach?

Roy
Burns
Bairstow
Root
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Woakes
Archer
Anderson
Wood/Broad/Leach depending on pitch, looks like spin Leach, quick Wood, seaming Broad, oh and Sam Curran probably in there somewhere, we have a fair few options, and I really like Foakes too, but we need to firm up the top order.

Hey there'll be injuries though, Jimmeh not fit atm.

Lest we forget we play another Test before the Ashes...!

I think Roy will be given a chance even though he doesn't even open for Sorry. I have massive reservations about his ability in the red ball game especially up top, but then I also have massive reservations about Buttler in red ball stuff and he has done alright since coming back in, so what do I know, etc.

Archer will be nailed on to play, so I'm starting to think Broad is coming to the end of the road after a modest season with the ball so far for Notts.

Joe Denly remains in very good form, I wouldn't rule him out of a spot in England's top 3/4.

So maybe this then (assuming Anderson is fit):

Roy
Burns
Denly
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Woakes
Archer
Anderson

Pretty similar to how see things but feel Root needs to step up to the plate and bat 3 - This is my predicted XI - extra bowler being Rashid as there is enough batting ability
Roy
Burns
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Woakes
Rashid
Archer
Anderson

I believe Wood is out for 4-6 weeks. Yesterday the team manager said Archer was being rested for the Ireland game. This morning the Beeb said he had a side strain, but didn't comment about the Ashes. Are you sure he's out for the Ashes.
