Just received a couple of dvds that were recorded on a sony HD camcorder. now they wony play at all on my laptop and i need to know what i need to be able to play them, tried VLC aswell and that doesn't work.

Sounds like to me that the discs weren't finalised, which means that they weren't completed properly to ensure they worked on DVD players, computers, etc etc

It may also be a codec issue, but this is the most likely culprit.

To weed out whether it is codecs, download and install this

Interesting one.

When you burn a DVD, it needs to be 'finalised'. If it isn't, your DVD player won't recognise it and susequently it won't play.

It could, however, be an issue with something called codecs. Online solutions are available which you can download and install. Give it a try and if it doesn't work, it's probably the finalising issue above.

Agree that they may not have been finalized and also with the possible codec issue. Out of interest , do the discs play on a stand alone dvd player? If they do then it's obviously an issue with the laptop dvd drive.
