Darwen, who were once (in the same guise? Mike/Olds will know I'm sure!) a Football League club, albeit not a very good one seeing as they hold a number of "lowest points" / "most conceded" records, have announced that they will not contest a winding-up order next week, and as such will cease to exist.

I believe Darwen FC were the first club to experiment with floodlights in the late Nineteenth Century.

Yes, they are the original club that played in the football league. Will be sad if they do go bust, however they have been in trouble for sometime, stemming I think from a dispute between former and present owners - bit more detail here - http://www.darwenreporter.com/2009/02/darwen-fc-going-bust-how-could-it.html

I've only been to the ground once, for a game last season against Holker Old Boys, and while very cold they had a pretty decent setup for there level, and a ground that had some proper character

I had a little look at their website. They've had crowds of 17, 84, 18 & 36 this season. Locals will moan when it's gone, but typically do very little to support their club

Iirc,Darwen is on the road between Bolton & Blackburn & the only thing i can remember about the town was a large chimney that Fred Dibnah must have missed -...

Isn't it also the town that invented evolution? ;)

A great shame to see them in this mess. I went there about three seasons ago and saw them play Leek CSOB in the North West Counties League, and the attendance that day not great either.

There was some really fascinating memorabilia on the social club walls about their time as a Football League club. I just hope that someone will safely store it.
