Tisdale’s Record Against Plymouth Argyle

Since Paul Tisdale took over the reigns at St James Park in 2006, there have been 12 Devon Derby games between the Grecians and the Pilgrims, including 2 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy ties.exeter_plymouth_argyle_feat

We had to wait until November 2010 for the first encounter. A JPT tie played at Home Park, with the score tied at 1-1 and penalties looking Daniel Nardiello (currently with Argyle) danced through the penalty box to seal the tie for Exeter 2-1. Peter Reid didn’t have to wait long for revenge, as his side comprehensively beat Exeter at Home Park in December 3-0. Victory for Exeter at St James Park just about sealed Argyle’s fate and relegation to league 2.

With the two sides separated by one division there would be no league games between the two sides in the 2011/12 season, there was still a JPT tie to savour at St James Park. With Luke Daley equalising James Dunne with a spectacular effort, the tie finished 1-1. Lenny Pidgeley in Exeter’s goal being the hero. Argyle unable to score any penalties, City managed to convert 3 of their 4 efforts to progress to the next round.

Just the one Devon Derby game for Argyle manager Carl Fletcher, as Exeter joined Argyle in League 2 for the 2012/13 season. A 1-1 draw at St James Park in December.

John Sheridan took over the reigns at Home Park and was quite an adversary for Paul Tisdale in these derby games. First blood went to Sheridan as Argyle were desperately clawing away from the clutches of the Conference, and managed a 1-0 win at Home Park in March 2013.

The 2013/14 season saw Paul Tisdale achieve something that few Exeter managers have done, that is a league double of their rivals. A comfortable 3-1 win at St James Park in October was followed up by a 2-1 win at Home Park in March.

John Sheridan, however, got revenge the following season with a league double over the Grecians. An easy 3-0 win over City in August 2014 at Home Park, was following up by a 3-1 in February at St James Park.

The teams have already met twice this season and honours are even. Argyle winning the JPT tie at Home Park in October 2-0, Exeter returned in November and thanks to a memorable moment from Ryan Harley won 2-1.

So, Tisdale’s overall record against the Pilgrims is P12, W5, D2, L5, F13, A17.
