Next Up: Exeter City v Wycombe Wanderers

Having performed well on the road once more, City will look to their first midweek home fixture of the season to try to win just their second match on home soil, although it won’t be easy against the surprise sercombeleaders of League Two. Liam Sercombe made a surprisingly early return to the side following the knock he picked up at Dagenham, but having limped off again it’s unlikely that he’ll be risked a second time in four days. This may open a starting berth up for David Noble, who has yet to start a game since returning to the club on loan from Oldham. Arron Davies was withdrawn at half time at Southend and David Wheeler is in line to replace him should he not make it. Tom Nichols is pressing for a recall too alongside four-goal top scorer Graham Cummins.

At 3:00 on the last Saturday of last season only the most optimistic of Wycombe supporters gave theainsworth Chairboys any hope of still being in the Football League at the end of the day especially after their 2-1 surrender at home to relegation rivals Bristol Rovers the previous week. However, a stunning 3-0 win at already relegated Torquay, coupled with Bristol Rovers going down to a 1-0 home defeat to Mansfield, ensured it was the Gas who headed into oblivion. The transformation of Wycombe has been incredible, and Gareth Ainsworth brings his Wycombe side to the Park proudly sitting atop the League Two table. While their usual tactics have been to the fore, with their good results has come the confidence to actually try to play the game a bit, meaning they have at least attempted to, (and succeeded in doing so), score goals as part of their 10-match unbeaten run in the league. Experienced ex-Scunthorpe (and briefly on loan at that lot down the A38) striker Paul Hayes has enjoyed a new lease of life back at the club where he once scored six in six on loan, and is top scorer with six. The key to their form appears to be a consistent line-up, only 17 players have been used so far this season.

The sides met three times last season thanks to a pairing in the JPT, and Wycombe were firmly in matt_jay_thumbcontrol, winning two and drawing one. The JPT meeting at the Park was first up and saw the Chairboys win 2-0 on a very forgettable night for City (bar debutant Matt Jay), McClure and Stewart on the scoresheet. November at Adams Park saw Wycombe take the lead through a deflected effort from Steven Craig before City overcame the most shocking negative tactics from the home side to eventually rescue a point through Alan Gow. Wycombe then won the league fixture at the Park 1-0 through a Max Kretzschmar goal. Overall the Football League head-to-head record is level with each side winning three times and four matches have finished level.
