International Football Tournament on World Cup Day

Exeter City Football Club is marking the day of the World Cup Final (Sunday 13 July 2014) by holding a special international tournament.

The Club will once again celebrate diversity in the local community when its 10th annual summer 5 a-side tournament is held at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Sports Complex.

The competition encourages participation from local black and minority ethnic teams and attracts players from many different parts of the world. Past finalists include sides representing Poland, Slovakia, Africa, Afghanistan, Lithuania and Saudi Arabia. Devon’s gay friendly football team, the Devon Lions, will also be taking part.

The tournament is being organised by Exeter City Supporters Trust’s One Game One Community Group and is being supported by the University of Exeter, Exeter City Council, Devon FA, Kick it Out, Exeter City FC Football in the Community and Tesco.

The tournament will be launched at 11am by Exeter’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Percy Prowse.

Two of the founding organisers of the summer tournament will be remembered as the tenth anniversary event takes place. Teams will compete for the Fair Play Award in memory of Fran Jenkin, who set up the Exeter City One Game One Community Group.   The Duncan Underhill memorial trophy will go to match officials. Duncan refereed early tournaments and was an active member of the Group.

Exeter City’s One Game One Community Group is part of the national Kick it Out campaign which aims to address all types of discrimination in football including race, disability, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation.
