Former Argyle and City Forward Wilf Carter Has Died

At the age of 79, Wilfred Carter has died. Wilf was born on 4th October 1933, in Wednesbury in the Midlands. He made his début for West Bromwich Albion in 1951 and his record with them was scoring 12 goals in 57 games over 6 seasons.

It was with Plymouth Argyle that he made his reputation and became a household name in Devon. In 1957 he moved to Devon and Plymouth Argyle. In 275 games he scored 148 times for the Pilgrims. In his first season he netted 32 times to be Argyle’s leading goal scorer, a feat he repeated every year for 6 seasons. He scored 8 hat-tricks which included 5 goals in a a single match in 1960 in a Division 2 game at Home Park against Charlton Athletic.

He moved to Exeter City in 1964. He made is debut in Division 3 in the 4-2 win over Peterborough United in the opening game of the season. His last professional game was in March 1966 in a 2-0 win over Grimsby Town. He made 48 appearances as a Grecian, scoring 6 times. He scored for City as follows:

  • 29th Aug 1964. Grimsby A. 2-1 defeat. 1 goal
  • 5th Sept. Mansfield H 3-2 defeat. 1 goal.
  • 12 Sept. Luton Town A 2-1 win. 1 goal
  • 21 Nov. Hull City A. 3-1 defeat. 1 goal
  • 11th Sept 1965.  Brighton 2-1 defeat. 1 goal
  • 19th March. Mansfield H. 2-2 draw. 1 goal
